I'm Crazy for Feeling So Lonely

It's one of my favorite songs. I sing it often when I'm on my own with the kids. The crazy part really seems to fit, haha.

Well, it has actually been a little crazy around here. I haven't even had much time to turn on my computer let alone blog. Yesterday, I finally connected the portable hard drive to my laptop to find out what files I still had. Wait. Back up a minute. Y'all know that both of my computers were down a couple of months ago, right? The desktop, which was practically brand new, stopped working bit by bit and finally stopped responding altogether when I tried to reload the operating system. My thinking is that it might actually be a hardware problem (as opposed to a software problem), but I haven't had time to do anything about it. The laptop, which is about 3-4 years old now, was infected with a gazillion viruses, and it basically went to a completely white screen after I tried to run the Webroot virus protection software. I shopped my laptop around to a couple of the "big box" computer repair departments, but no one was willing to give me a guarantee that my $400 would buy me back a fully operational laptop. I finally ended up taking it to a small mom-and-pop type shop about a week before I went into the hospital. I figured I could handle the odds for $200 (but not for $400).

The service took longer than necessary because I wasn't able to drop off the restore software until a couple of weeks after I'd gotten out of the hospital, but it did eventually get fully restored. Unfortunately, that involved completely erasing the hard drive, which included all of the digital pictures we'd taken since Pumpkin's birth. Fortunately for me, or so I thought, I'd taken the precaution of backing up my pictures and had at least all the files from 2004-2007 saved on the portable hard drive. I explained this to the tech and asked him to only save the files from this year since I already had the rest. I also explained that he shouldn't run the software that comes with the drive since I was just using the drive as a portable USB drive rather than full backup hard drive. Tough to explain here, but the drive has its own software that allows you to automatically backup your files whenever you plug it in. I don't use it because when I needed to get to the files, I couldn't figure out how to open them (they're encoded somehow). Anyway, to end this story now, let's just say that the tech didn't get the message. Apparently, he ran the software and ended up DELETING all of the files I'd backed up. Now, all I have left are the pictures from July and August 2008. Grrrrrr....boneheads!

Now, I have to try and piece everything back together from backup CDs I have floating around the house. Only problem is that I'm fairly certain I haven't created any backup CDs this year so pretty much all our pictures from 2008 may be lost forever. :(
